3 Untrue Wedding Planning Myths
Planning a wedding is exciting, but let’s be honest—it can also be overwhelming.
Between choosing the perfect venue, picking the dress, and organizing every little detail, it’s easy to start believing some common wedding myths. While these myths are often passed on as well-meaning advice from friends and family or late-night research on the internet, they’re not always true.
Here, I’m busting three of the most common wedding planning myths to help you on your wedding planning journey!
1) DIY Isn’t Always Cheaper
A common myth I hear all the time is that DIY wedding decor and floral arrangements are always cheaper than hiring a professional. In reality, the costs of DIY can add up in unexpected ways—mainly your time. From researching floral options to buying materials to assembling the centerpieces and arranging flowers, the time commitment can be enormous. And that doesn’t even cover the logistical nightmare of transporting everything to the venue, setting it up, and cleaning up afterward.
You might think DIY will save you money, but think about how much your time is worth. Not to mention the space in your home taken up by supplies in the months leading up to your wedding. Many couples find themselves stressed out by the number of boxes stacked in their living rooms weeks before the big day.
Hiring a wedding professional, like a florist or a decorator, means you don’t have to worry about these details. They’ll handle everything—from the setup to the cleanup—leaving you more time to focus on what matters: enjoying your wedding day with your loved ones.
2) You Have to Have the Same Number of Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
The idea that you must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen is an old tradition, but it’s not a rule. More and more couples are choosing to have mismatched wedding parties, and guess what? That’s totally okay!
If you want to invite your best friend to stand by your side, even if it means having one more bridesmaid than groomsman, go for it! If your wedding party doesn’t match up perfectly, it’s no big deal—one bridesmaid can walk with two groomsmen, or you can switch things up in a way that feels right for you. Your wedding day is about celebrating your relationships.
3) Your Friends Can Replace Hiring a Professional
While your friend who took a photography class or your cousin who’s great at making playlists may seem like a good stand-in, there’s simply no replacing a professional when it comes to your wedding.
A professional photographer brings top-tier equipment, editing skills, and experience with lighting, angles, and the flow of a wedding day. They also have backup plans in case something goes wrong, which is something your friend or family member may not be able to provide. The same goes for other wedding professionals, like DJs or planners. A professional DJ knows how to work a crowd, keep the energy up, and troubleshoot if things go wrong. An extroverted friend with a great playlist doesn’t have the same experience managing the flow of a wedding day.
By hiring professionals, you’re investing in peace of mind. They’re there to make sure everything runs smoothly so you can enjoy every moment of your big day without worrying about whether the music will play or the photographer will capture that perfect shot.
Wedding planning can be full of pressure to follow tradition and make everything perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s about celebrating your love with your favorite people. Whether you decide to hire a professional, break from tradition, or rethink DIY projects, remember: there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to weddings! Find what sparks joy and follow your True North!
